On a random Thursday in 2024, I woke up to 99+ connections, 44 DMs, and 25 notifs.

What? Was? HAPPENING??!

I woke up to a LinkedIn miracle.

I posted a lead magnet and went to sleep.

Woke up to being spammed awake by LinkedIn.

The post was 1,000 marketing prompts.

And it had gone VIRAL.

I hurriedly sent them my calendar booking link.

Zero discovery calls.
Zero new clients.
Zero revenue.

I'd attracted the masses.

Just not my people.

Here's what I learned the hard way:

Viral doesn't pay your bills. Qualified leads do.

That lead magnet was too broad.

Anyone could use it. Everyone downloaded it.

But none of them had a specific problem I could solve.

That's when I rebuilt my entire lead magnet strategy around 3 elements.

What makes a lead magnet actually convert

1. Immediate usage.

They should be able to use it today.

Not read it. Not study it. Use it.

If it sits in their downloads folder… It's already dead.

Best examples are things like:

  • Templates

  • Checklists

  • Highly-customised AI prompts

  • GPTs

  • Claude skills

2. Solves a specific problem.

Not "marketing tips." Not "LinkedIn advice."

Those are too generic.

Weirdly enough, people move so quickly to download lead magnets like this:

"The exact DM script I use to turn comments into booked calls."

But Justin, why??

This lead magnet hints at solving a specific problem they urgently need solved.

So remember - be very specific.

3. Hints at a bigger problem.

You can do the above 2, but still fail if you don’t have this.

The best lead magnets solve one thing.

And make the reader realise there's a deeper issue they need help with.

That's when they reach out.

That's the door to a discovery call.

Your pipeline must align and stack like this:

LinkedIn post → Lead magnet → Offer

My 1,000 prompts had missed this third alignment step.

It was entertaining. Not converting.

But the moment I built lead magnets with these 3 elements —

The downloads slowed down.

But I got more DMs and 3 booked sales calls/week.

So STOP chasing virality.

Chase after qualified leads using well-positioned lead magnets instead.
